Mid-July in a humid spell is about as busy as the Scottish fly calendar gets. Midges swarm at dawn and dusk, especially near water and shelter belts, and this is when sweet itch flares up — those broken manes and rubbed tail heads appear almost overnight. Clegs (horseflies) are at their boldest on warm, heavy days like these, delivering painful bites that can leave lumps and make even a placid horse jumpy to handle.
